Mission and Vision

Work With Us

Native and natural are intrinsic and longstanding principles of Maryl design. Hawaii is a temperate paradise, and the focus in every design begins at the conceptual stage to make certain that our footprints on our beautiful islands are delicate and sensitive.

To this end, from site analysis through to finished completion, every aspect of environmental impact and sustainability is rigorously examined. Not the least of this is the recycling of scrap building materials –virtually 100% of our construction byproducts are recycled.

While not an exhaustive list, typical design considerations include:

  • Creating the most efficient footprint on this site, meaning the least possible disturbance to the existing natural terrain.
  • Orientation of building envelopes to maximize privacy and landscape views and also to take advantage of cross-breezes for passive cooling, in order to minimize the demand on the mechanical systems.
  • An extensive use of operable windows and sliding doors provides natural ventilation and as well as abundant daylight to interior spaces. The resulting reduction in need for mechanical cooling and interior lighting translates to lower energy costs for the owner.
  • Exterior materials are selected for durable and reliable long-term performance and proven in our demanding climate to require minimal maintenance.
  • Designs feature extensive exterior sun screening elements to shade interior spaces from direct sunlight. Such screening is designed to reduce the overall cooling demands on mechanical systems, resulting in lower energy costs. Traditional wide eves and rain capture minimizes irrigation requirements.
  • Paints, stains, and oil finishes used throughout interiors contain low volatile organic compound content, to ensure interior air quality.
  • Locally-provided materials are used as much as possible. Recycled and sustainably-harvested materials is also a central design focus. Interior woodwork is produced from lumber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Concealed plywood and particleboard to be free of urea formaldehyde and manufactured from recycled post-consumer products where applicable.
  • Special care is taken during construction to minimize the extent of site disturbance, to maintain as much as possible of the pre-existing natural site vegetation. When possible, drive and pathway paving is minimized, to reduce absorption of solar heat and to reduce storm water runoff.
  • Exterior lighting is limited to specific areas using directional downlights, to minimize light pollution and glare, reduce energy costs, and to maintain the nighttime 'dark sky'.
